By the way, on August 10, 2010 there is a new book coming out by John Canemaker called "Two Guys Named Joe" which will feature the art and life of Disney/Pixar story artists Joe Ranft and Joe Grant.

And since this is a blog of NOTES and INSPIRATION for my AAU students the pedagogue in me wants to point out to students that the tribute film above by the amazing Mr. Musker is a stellar example of what a Story Reel/Animatic should look like. So much is said with no dialogue and the simplest, most direct sketches.

Wow. What a moving film. I'm always amazed to see how much emotion comes across in films like this with simple drawings. I'd like my best drawings to have the character that these "simple" ones have.
Unbelievable. I was just reading up on him a couple months ago when I saw a link for his book on amazon. At the same time I read his interview on Pixar's website from back in January of 2002. He had a lot of insightful wisdom that I'll never forget, especially since I aspire to be a Story Artist as well. I had no idea that he passed away last year. He will be surely missed, that's for sure.
Really great!!!
Thanks!!!!
