Making of Princess Mononoke - Hayao Miyazaki
An extensive documentary film (with English subtitles) on the making-of Hayao Miyazaki's animated film "Princess Mononoke" has been posted online . This is an excellent overview of the making of a major animated film. Watch it while you can. Sometimes these things don't stay up for long :
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
By the way, did you know that Miyazaki's newest animated film "Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea" is the most successful film in Japan for 2009, having already made ¥14.2 billion yen = $134.6 million dollars as of September 28, 2008 ? (that is in Japan alone) . Ponyo is slated for release in North America in 2009 by the Walt Disney Co.
For those who aren't aware Miyazaki is basically the top in Japan and has been for a while. At least in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI would have to suggest Spirited Away as a great piece to check out as well. Definitely a must see for both story and art direction (and of course animation).
Hi there! Thanks for visiting the Ghibli blog and helping spread the word. I really enjoy your blog, as I enjoy all animation blogs.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Miyazaki has been Japan's box office king for a decade, ever since Mononoke became a phenomenon in '97. It's almost staggering, really, when you compare the numbers against the rest of Japan's domestic film industry. It is a dominance rarely seen - Speilberg and E.T. is a good example. Or maybe Chaplin.
It's great to see such success for Miyazaki, given his many ups and downs over his long career. It guarantees that Ghibli will remain a vital force for many, many years.
Again, thanks for stopping by. Feel free to steal whatever you need.
Hi, Daniel,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by here. I really do appreciate what you have done in getting the word out about Studio Ghibli's films and the great stuff you post on your blog and on YouTube.
This blog is intended as a clearinghouse of information that I think will be useful to my animaton students at The Academy of Art. I try to put up links to articles or film clips that I find interesting and inspiring , which I hope that the students will also find inspiring.
The Miyazaki documentary you posted is wonderful. Thanks again for putting that up as well as the other things you've posted.
