Efforts into 3D became more intense and qualitative and the people were saturated with marketing schemes. 2D was just let go, and this talk about its "obsolete" nature became prevalent with most who did not stop to think how much richer and relevant it still is (and will always be). People just need another mainstream film which incorporates the best of both worlds (story and medium).
